There is not one person out there who hasn’t felt like throwing things around as a result of small, everyday bits of frustration. They might have even done it owing to the apparent impossibility of shopping for the right gifts. That’s exactly what gadgets are here to solve. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or you’re looking to simply be a better person when it comes to gifts, the Internet is your trustworthy advisor.

Practically, you can’t have machines do everything for you. And in an era where (almost) everything is turning automatic, we should indeed stick to performing our basic functions ourselves rather than relying on gadgets for everything. However, this is a completely different matter.

The point is this: think of that one annoying thing that simply eats up a lot of your spare time or, worse, time when you should be working. Think of that one annoying activity which, for some reason, brings you too the edge every single day. Well, chances are thousands of people out there have had the same problem as you. And at least one of them has taken the trouble to invent gadgets that solve these everyday problems.

For example, consider losing the same objects over and over again. It’s a genuine nuisance to have to look for your keys every morning when you’re rushing to get to work, after you ruthlessly threw them in a random corner the evening before. It’s an outrage – keys should find themselves, shouldn’t they? Well, they don’t, but luckily, there are gadgets that allow you to find them in the blink of an eye.

Needless to say, if you happen to live in the country side you must be quite familiar with those pesky spiders that crawl up walls and furniture. There are especially designed gadgets to catch these crazy critters from a long distance without being an acrobat and without having to climb cabinets and shelves.

In any case, I’m sure you get the idea – but these functional items are just a few examples in the fascinating world of gadgets. There’s also that spot for people who simply need to improve an area where they spend a lot of time (cars or bachelor pads) – in this case, the right gifts can make wonders. And it goes for people who are specifically fanatic about something, whether it’s Barbie or Batman.

Baby-related gifts are also a significant progress. If your target is a young mother, you can either choose something that soothes the baby before he goes to sleep, that lets you hear the baby if he’s crying, or even complicated functional items such as household systems that have the whole house under video and audio surveillance, so as not to let you miss a single step or chuckle from your beloved offspring.

Seriously now – recent surveys show that the amount of money people were willing to spend on electronics and gadgets the previous year, per household, reaches a sum oscillating around 2000$, which is almost double as compared to that in 2005, and 23 times the amount in 1975. The number of electronic household gadgets has also increased overwhelmingly, up to 26 (anything from mp3 players to state of the art remote controls). This is the bottom line – they may have different reasons and tastes, but people will always be extremely attracted to revolutionary gifts. And that should say a lot about your next shopping for gifts.

Gifts that enter the realm of the classical no longer seem to bring any thrill to the receiver. So preserve that passionate experience of the kid under the Christmas tree by offering intelligent gadgets to friends.

There was probably a time when the words “pink” and “gadgets” did not appear in the same sentence, much less next to each other. After all, these words could not be farther from each other in meaning. “Pink” denotes femininity and daintiness, while “gadgets” conjure up images of computers and electronic technology. However, this is not the case anymore. A couple of quick searches on the Internet will find you a myriad of gadgets in various shades of pink, from digital cameras to USB flash drives.

Have girlish girls become more of techies, or have female geeks become more inclined to show their feminine side? Probably both, but whichever it is, pink gadgets have arrived and they’re here to stay. You would be hard-pressed to find a gadget, say a cellphone for example, that was not available in the color pink. So ladies, rejoice. If you love both the color pink and high tech gadgets, then you should not be missing out on pink gadgets.

Express yourself and play your favorite music on pink dog-shaped speakers. Add touches of femininity to your computer or laptop with a pink keyboard and mouse. Making home improvements need not be a manly task – do it with a pink tool kit, complete with a hammer, pliers, and everything else you need. Stay nice and sweet while digging in the dirt with a pink garden kit. When going to the gym, ditch your dull and boring gear and bring along a pink gym kit instead. Match your pink automobile with a ladies car set that will hold all your belongings while you’re on the road.

Pink gadgets are not only nice to look at, they’re also useful and practical. Another reason to love pink gadgets is that they allow you to be color coordinated at all times. Finally, an MP3 player that matches your lip gloss and your handbag.

UK – wasted food now costs UK homes £10 billion

The cost of needlessly wasted food to UK households is £10 billion a year, £2 billion higher than previously estimated according to new research. The research gives detailed new insights into the nature and amount of food waste thrown away in the UK and is believed to be the most comprehensive study of its kind ever carried out.

It reveals that the average household throws out £420 of good food a year. For the average family with children it’s higher at £610 – money, which could have helped pay household bills.

Researchers found that more than half the good food thrown out, worth £6 billion a year, is bought and simply left unused or untouched. For example, each day 1.3 million unopened yoghurt pots, 5,500 whole chickens and 440,000 ready meals are thrown away in the UK. The study revealed that £1 billion worth of wasted food is still “in date”. It costs Council Tax payers £1 billion a year to dispose of food waste.

Stopping the waste of good food could avoid 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents from being emitted each year – the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off of UK roads.

The Food We Waste Report:

This study which is believed to be the first of its kind in the world, consisted of a detailed survey of households and a physical analysis of their waste.

A representative sample of 2,715 households in England and Wales was interviewed, and several weeks later, 2,138 of them had their waste collected for analysis – with their signed consent.

The research was designed so that it could quantify the amounts and types of food waste being produced, but also made links between this and the attitudes displayed by, and disposal options available to the household.

Key Facts

· In the UK we are throwing away one third of the food we buy. That’s like one in three bagfuls of food shopping going straight in the bin.

· We throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food each year in the UK, when most of this food could have been eaten. (Its not just peelings and bones -its good food). That’s equivalent to filling Wembley Stadium with food waste 8 times over!

· In terms of environmental impact – producing, storing and getting the food to our homes uses a lot of energy. The carbon impact of food waste is enormous. Tackling it would provide a carbon benefit equivalent to taking 1 in 5 cars off of UK roads.

· Most of the wasted food reaches landfill sites where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

· High economic cost – at least £10bn worth of food that could have been eaten is thrown out every year.

· We throw food out for two main reasons: food gets forgotten and is left unused; we serve up too much and don’t use leftovers.

Let’s be honest there is nothing more exciting than finding a new gadget that can at the very least keep you entertained and at the very most revolutionise the way you do things. Okay I admit that these are not easy criteria against which you can judge a new gadget.

I guess on reflection the gadget might not have to revolutionise your life but nevertheless it should without doubt use new technology and make you raise a smile. Some of the best examples of new gadgets are the range of USB gadgets that have been released onto the market.

For those technophobes out there the USB or Universal Serial Bus is, put simply, a way of connecting an external device to your computer. A lot of people these days carry around small USB pens that hold information at play the same role that the floppy disc used to.

Nowadays a great deal of the equipment that is used alongside a computer such as a keyboard and the mouse can be connected this way. And in the gadget world many toys have been created that utilise this technology.

I was recently given a USB pole dancing woman that I have called Beatrice. Beatrice dances every time I type a word into my keyboard. She also keeps count of the number of words I write in a day – she’s not just a pretty face then! My colleagues and I find it hilarious although I don’t think my boss is too impressed when she stays quiet for half a day – a big giveaway if you’re not writing!

Anyway here is an insight into some of the best USB offerings that I have found available in the market.

USB Boxer

I recently came across the USB boxer. This six inch tall guy stands on your desk and pounds away at a punch bag at the rate at which you punch. The device comes with unbelievable sound effects that sound on the impact of the gloves to the punch bag and makes authentic ringside noises.

The software package includes some games in which you can enact a boxing bout and the action on screen is relayed and played out by the man in front of you. Pitched as a great way to work out some aggression this USB gadget really packs a punch!

USB putting green

The USB putting green is a great way to play golf against your workmates without even leaving the office. You don’t need a silly dress code just a slightly silly sense of humour. It is a miniature version of the conventional ball returning putt returner.

The aim of the game is to putt into the centre of the device and the ball is subsequently spat back at you. It comes with two miniature putters and fortunately six tiny balls – there is no excuse for losing them then – especially considering you are unlikely to have a water hazard or bunker on your desk.

USB Dog

Okay this takes the prize for the funniest, yet at the same time, most tasteless of all the USB gadgets I have come across. The dog is attached to a USB device which, when connected to the computer, humps away like a dog on heat. The marketing men say that your computer has done a great deal for you and that it’s about time you gave something back. I’m not sure this is exactly what they meant but very funny nevertheless!
