The prepay for my studio apartment in the most expensive part of California (the SF Bay Area) would be about $50/mo.

The actual monthly is about $25.

    You figure it out :)

No but it is more convenient. I have prepay electric (don’t have gas), it was already in when I moved in and have found it to be easier to manage as I don’t have a bill, I just top up with £10 a week, it’s as simple as that!

I work for ScottishPower and can confirm that prepayment meters are more expensive. However, some suppliers, including us if you have not been with us for 12 months, charge for replacing the meter to a credit meter. Check this out with your supplier.

No, contract is cheapest, although if you want the cheapest price gas and electricity (cheaper than most contract prices) and not be tied into a contract then take a look at http://www.UtilitySaving.Biz – This is the way forward with all utilities

I have worked for a utility company and going onto prepayment meters are more expensive than on credit meters for prepayment meters you pay a standing charge per day. The standing charge varies from each utility company where as a credit meter there is no standing charge.

its more expensive as they charge you for the meter and anything else they can. its a good idea from the point it puts you in control of your gas and electric.
