If you turn off the powerpoint switch you can save some money as certain appliances run on standby mode and use a small amount of electricity to power displays, clocks etc. If not vital, turn them off. If everyone turned off unwanted displays vast amounts of electricity would not have to be generated,

There are many kinds of appliances that are using small amts of electricity even though you aren’t using them for the purpose they were bought. Those microwaves, coffee pots, massage chairs, and anything that has a small digital window for telling the time is using your electric power to do so. There are many, many appliances guilty of this on the market today. Your typical coffee-maker that is plugged in for hours, continuously re-heats your coffee and anything with a heating element draws more than it’s share of power. If you have a dvd player, or anything else with a small lit up window telling you it has power – it uses power. Think hard, you can probably come up with many of such electricity gobblers.

The highest electric using appliances, even when turned off, are TV’s, computers and stereo equipment. Next is anything that has a LED clock such as the microwave and coffee pot. Never seen a toaster with one. I have a power strip on my electronics that is turned off when not in use.
