What are some simple ways to save on my electric and heat bills?

I live in the Midwest and with Winter approaching, I’d like to keep my heat (gas) and electric bills down. Any easy adjustments I can make to cut costs?

as far as electric……get those fluorescent low wattage bulbs…this could save you $300 a year…..heat wise, turn off heat or shut doors to any room not being used…..turn ur thermostat down and wear sweaters, socks, etc…. when home

One of the main things that a lot of people do not do it re-think the setting on your thermostat. If you set it at 78-80 in winter…try moving it to 74-76…you will be surprised at how much is saved by just doing that. Another thing is…check all your windows and doors to make sure they are sealed good…if not…install some insulation strips. After it gets cold…check your electric plugs on the outer walls. Put you hand down next to them and see if they are cold…if so you are leaking your good heat for cold air at that point. You can always buy the insulation covers now…and install them behind the plug covers on all of these.

Switch to energy efficient lights, get weather strips for your doors/windows. Check for any air leaks around the doors/windows and if you find any then use the weather strips and you can find them at almost any hardware/retail store. Keep your thermostat at 72 degrees or whatever you feel is the lowest temperature that is most comfortable for you. Just remember to keep your lights off when you’re not using them..that will help big time.

One of the best ways is to caulk around windows adn doors where cold air can come in and warm air escapes. You can also install weatherstipping around the doors if there is a large gap. if your windows are really old they make a type of clear wrap that goes over the windows to help block the air. Open the curtains during the day to let the sunlight help heat the room and close them at night.
